If you were told you were a piece of s*** and you kept thinking of it that way, you would turn yourself into that. In the same way, if you woke up from a coma and someone told you that you were the president of a country, you would act, think, and speak like a president. Whatever meaning you give to your dreams or self, that's what you will get. So be mindful of what you're asking yourself to give meaning to.
Once upon a time, a young Marine struggled with breathing problems and was told by other Marines that he would not last more than a year in the corps. He was even told he wouldn’t make it through boot camp, and that if he did, he would not last more than two years in the Marine Corps. These were people who valued their strength over somebody else’s meanings. They did not value the meanings that were inside of this Marine. He ran every day, changed his sleeping schedule, improved his workout plan, and modified his meal plans. At last, he broke through to his issue. He became faster than his peers. His meaning was death before failure. This young Marine was me. I chose this meaning carefully, and I knew what I wanted. I knew I wanted to succeed. Therefore, I went after success with a meaning.
If you wish to prioritize meanings,
- Know what you wish to give meaning to
- Identify the value of your meaning
- Avoid giving meaning to factors you don't wish to give meaning to
- Give the meaning you envision to factors you want to change
- Have a blueprint
- Execute your blueprint
- Stay away from meaningless meanings
Challenge: Think about one thing you’ve done even though you were once told you couldn’t. What was the meaning you gave to this issue?
Now, think of one ongoing problem you are having. Give it a meaning. Write it down and read it every morning when you wake up.
Food for thought: Can meaning change from person to person? Can you alter the direction of your life or dreams through the meanings you give to them?
